While the Liturgy is the heart of Christian worship, the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed, and the source from which all her power flows, it is not possible for us to fill up all of our day with participation in the Liturgy, nor is the spiritual life limited solely to participation in the Liturgy. Yet the Christian is called to pray without ceasing or losing heart. Popular devotions play a crucial role in helping to foster this ceaseless, persevering prayer.
Popular devotions do not replace the liturgical life of the Church, but rather serve as a means of extending it into everyday life, permeating everything we do with worship to God. Thus the Faithful may encounter their living Savior and Lord, the Eternal and Sovereign High Priest, Prophet, and King, wherever they may be. Popular devotions, when lived in harmony with the Liturgy, draw inspiration from it and ultimately lead back to it, fostering a fuller and more active participation in the Liturgy, which is also called the Work of the People, i.e., their sacred duty before God.
Popular devotions also perform an irreplaceable function of spreading the Gospel and bringing worship into daily life for people of various cultures and times. At the same time, the Church assimilates certain aspects of the culture, which become absorbed and integrated into the life of the Church. Popular devotions also are a constant reminder of the social dimension of the Gospel: the interdependence of the human family, and the Christian’s responsibility to work for the common good of all humanity and to promote the welfare of the poor, for whom God shows special concern.
